Another good reason to drive 50 mph: you don’t have to read bumper stickers as people pass – in fact, it’s not possible to read them because people who pass us are going too doggone fast…
Well, it may be Friday the 13th, but it looks good from where we sit in Anchorage, Alaska, this evening. First, we did sleep until almost 7:00 this morning, once more giving us a long winter’s nap (10 hours) – and it’s not even Christmas. And the mattress on the bed in the hotel was great – it really wasn’t that good, but it was certainly better than what we’ve been used to since we ruined our air mattress. We did have a good big breakfast – more food than we could begin to think about eating, and we had chosen the smallest meals on the menu. Our supper tonight was our leftover Chicken Alfredo from yesterday – and it was almost as good today as when it was fresh. That restaurant gets an A+.
Today we got some really good looks at the glaciers in the mountains as we passed. That was a treat. The glaciers we passed before were mostly off side roads, and we didn’t drive to see any of them because of the time crunch in getting here. It was really interesting, too, to see how the snow stays on the north facing sides of the mountains, but is almost totally gone on the south facing sides. I guess that’s related to moss that grows on the north side of a tree… or something… (Ruthine says that this is a joke – so laugh!)
When we got to Anchorage today, we broke down and bought a regular mattress for our bed. We are still hoping to fix the air mattress. But if we can’t, there probably won’t be a choice of a place to buy one in Ninilchek – and maybe no place at all. We just didn’t want to take that chance when there is a Sam’s Club here.
In a way, it’s hard to believe that we’ve been on the road for three weeks. On the other hand, we are both more than ready to come to a stand still for awhile. Realizing that the trip home won’t be such a push is encouraging. There were places we really would have liked to spend more time. We’ll have that luxury on the return trip.
